COTTAGE EXTENSION AND RENOVATION
MWP Architects were asked to design and contract administer the upgrade and extension of an old cottage in the village of Abernyte.
The property was in a poor condition suffering from dampness and needed to be completely gutted. Timber preservation treatments were carried out and a new insulated concrete floor was installed along with new wall framing incorporating insulation. Existing headroom was restricted on the first floor so new dormer windows were designed to increase usable space. There is now a new master bedroom en-suite. Extensions were added to incorporate a new kitchen, utility room and WC. A new double sided wood burning stove was installed into the existing fireplace between the sitting room and new kitchen.
Scottish larch cladding was used as an economical and attractive timber rain screen to the new build elements and the existing stone walls were re-pointed in lime mortar.
New floor to ceiling double glazed, joiner made screens provide views and light. The high vaulted ceiling in the new kitchen gives a feeling of volume and space in contrast to the original cottage.
