Highland Cottage Restoration and Conservation

The cottage and its beautiful gardens nestle in the foothills in the Scottish Highlands on the edge of a conservation village.

The project required Muir Walker Pride to substantially upgrade, restore and reconfigure a run-down cottage and integrate the adjacent tractor shed and dilapidated bothy together to create a new house that responded to its immediate environment & its sensitive location. The 3 buildings, although adjacent, had no internal connections and different floor levels. New slappings & steps were created to link the disparate elements & the middle tractor shed converted into the vaulted Kitchen / dining room at the heart of the house. The hay loft window in the Kitchen provides an attractive feature through which distant treetops are visible.

Damp issues were eradicated, the building envelope was insulated and made as air-tight as possible. An air-source heat pump linked to new underfloor heating with feature wood burning stoves as attractive features.

Quality internal finishes were selected to enhance the simple volumetric quality of the buildings. The design provides for a comfortable, charismatic and energy efficient house.
